72 Hour Emergency Preparedness Kit
 
Following a major disaster, relief efforts could be delayed.  Therefore, it is important for you to have an emergency preparedness kit capable of providing for the basic needs of an individual or family for up to 72 hours following an emergency or disaster event.  This household kit should include the following items:
 
Food- Store at least a three (3) day supply of non- perishable food.  This may include the following:
  • Canned meat, fruit, juices, milk, soups and vegetables
  • Peanut butter, trail mix, granola bars and crackers
  • Special foods for infants, the elderly or those on special diets
  • Cookies and hard candy
  • Vitamins
Water- Water should be stored in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles or milk jugs.  You should keep at least a three (3) day supply of water for each member of your household.  This equates to one gallon per person, per day.
 
First Aid Supplies- You should assemble or purchase a kit for your home and vehicle.  First aid kits should include, at a minimum, the following items:
  • Sterile adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes
  • Two and Four inch gauze pads (4-6 each)
  • Hypoallergenic adhesive tape
  • Scissors, tweezers, needles, safety pins and thermometer
  • Hand sanitizer, soap or other cleaning agent
  • Aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever
  • Antacid, laxative, anti-diarrhea medication
Tools and Supplies- These items may include the following:
  • Paper cups, plates and utensils 
  • Battery operated radio with extra batteries
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Non-electric can opener
  • ABC Fire Extinguisher 
  • Matches in a watertight container
  • Toilet paper
  • Household chlorine bleach
  • Feminine supplies
  • Wrench to shutoff household gas and water supplies
  • Plastic garbage bags and ties
 
Clothing and Bedding
  • Rain gear 
  • Sleeping bags/blankets
  • Hats and gloves
  • Thermal underwear
Special Items
  • Medication (prescription and non-prescription)
  • Important family records
  • Entertainment materials (books and games)
